Retinal vascular changes in pre-diabetes and prehypertension: new findings and their research and clinical implications.

چکیده
T he retinal vasculature can be viewed directly and noninvasively, offering a unique and easily accessible “window” to study the health and disease of the human microcirculation in vivo. In the last decade, advances in digital retinal photography and imaging techniques have allowed precise characterization of subtle retinal vascular changes in large populations. These retinal changes can be broadly divided into four groups: 1) classic retinal vascular changes in diabetes and hypertension (i.e., diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy), 2) isolated retinopathy signs in individuals with diabetes or hypertension (e.g., microaneurysm, retinal hemorrhage, or cotton wool spot), 3) changes in retinal vascular caliber, and 4) changes in retinal vascular architecture (e.g., retinal tortuosity). New studies in large populations now show that retinal vascular changes are common in the general population and may precede the subsequent development of overt diabetes and hypertension. A consistent pattern of associations is also emerging, showing that specific retinal vascular changes may be related differently to hyperglycemia and blood pressure. In this review, we summarize recent studies on the retinal vascular changes seen in diabetes and hypertension and speculate on potential research and clinical implications. Histochemical study of retinal photoreceptors development during pre- and postnatal period and their association with retinal pigment epithelium
Objective(s):The aim of this study was to evaluate distribution and changes of glycoconjugates of retinal photoreceptors during both pre- and postnatal development. Materials and Methods: Tissue sections from days 15 to 20 of Wistar rat embryos and 1 to 12 postnatal days of rat newborns including developing eye were prepared for lectinhistochemistry technique. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-label...
متن کاملCorrelation between Visual Acuity and Optical Coherence Tomography-Measured Retinal Thickness in Diabetic Macular Edema
Background and Objective: Diabetic macular edema (DME) is one of the common complications of diabetes which significantly accounts for preventable visual impairment and blindness. Central macular thickness (CMT) is a feature found in DME patients. This study aims to determine the relationship between optical coherence tomography (OCT)-measured CMT and visual acuity (VA) in patients with DME bef...
متن کاملClinical Approaches of Retinal Diseases in Pregnancy
Pregnancy leads to significant changes in the body, which potentially affect the retina. Pregnancy can induce disease such as that seen in hypertensive retinopathy and choroidopathy. It can cause exudative retinal detachments in the HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets), disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), ...
متن کاملEvaluation of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Findings in Patients with Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion
Purpose: To analyze the correlation of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) findings with visual acuity (VA) in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 20 eyes of 20 patients with unilateral BRVO involving the macula referred to the ophthalmology clinic of Rassoul Akram Hospital. OCTA imaging was conducted for all patie...
متن کاملAqueous Garlic Extract Alleviates Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Retinal Tissue of Rats with Diabetes Type 2
Background and Objective: Retinopathy is a common difficulty in diabetic subjects. Hyperglycemia damages the tissues through stimulation of oxidative stress and inflammation. Since the antioxidant function of garlic has been proven, in the current report the activity of aqueous garlic extract (AGE) upon the oxidative stress and inflammation in the retinal substances of rats with diabetes was in...
